The Great Depression was a very large and long economic catastrophe. It began in October of 1929, with the major stock market crash being the cause. Then later in December of 1941, the depression was lifted when America gets drawn into World War Two. In American history, it was the hardest, most widespread depression of the 20th century. Not only did it effect the poor, but also the rich as well. International trade went down 50%, farming fell by 60%, and un employment rose between 25%-33%. The depression hit hard in the United States, but also effects many other countries due to trade.
What made the depression different from any other economic problem, was the fact that it lasted for so long. The Great Depression caused misery for a little of a decade. Another factor in what made it a "depression" was, how fast and drastic the economy dropped. Many different factors can all sum up to be one great big problem, just as the depression did.
